Signs, signs, everywhere a sign.... as the Five Man Electronical Band noted, the world is full of signs. In Central Saanich, we have various types of signage for roads, trails, parks, beach accesses, municipal buildings, and more. We have recently created a strategy that both addresses signage designs and placement. One of our objectives is to consolidate signs and eliminate redundant signs.

The purpose of the Signage Strategy is:

  1. Improve wayfinding/directional signage
    1. Facilitate active transportation through clear route marking
    2. Facilitate park, trail and beach use with clear signage
    3. Facilitate economic development through promotion of businesses, farms, tourism and recreation;
  2. Improve the visual look of the District and build the District’s brand and community character;
  3. Share history and heritage of Central Saanich and support cultural revitalization alongside local First Nations;
  4. Improve accessibility by optimizing legibility of signage; and
  5. Improve safety for residents and visitors.

The Strategy is also mindful of maintaining the character and history of the District. Current community welcome signs and park signs will not be replaced without community consultation.

About the designs

The designs differ for parks, vehicular directional, welcome, and active transportation signs. They celebrate the culture of the District and its First Nations, promote local businesses and farms, improve accessibility, safety and navigation, encourage residents and visitors to enjoy Central Saanich’s parks and beaches, and encourage active transportation.

The designs captures the expression of ocean waves and agricultural fields, playing on the merger of land and sea. Some sings include SENĆOŦEN place names and opportunities to include local Indigenous art. The colours capture the District brand and suit the natural environment.
