Consultation has concluded

Based on resident concerns, in September 2022, Council passed a motion to consider closing Early Place to through traffic for a trial period of one year following 60 days of consultation and education with the community.

Background

Residents have voiced safety concerns about the impact of the amount of thru traffic on Early Place and the speed of vehicles. Early Place is used by the general public as a shortcut but not designed as a connector road.

    Permanent speed humps will be installed on in early June Early Place to assist with traffic calming.

    At the May 8, 2023, Council meeting, the following direction was determined for Early Place. The District will implement a phased approach to address safety on Early Place starting with no parking on the inside curves and installation of temporary speed humps this spring/summer. The District will review traffic and speed along Early Place and Verdier during the 2024 school year to determine efficacy.

    Central Saanich carried out a neighbourhood consultation from January to March, 2023, Emergency Services were consulted on closing Early Place and provided feedback; additionally, traffic volume and speed counts were conducted on Early Place and Verdier Avenue. Results are to be presented at the May 8, 2023 Regular Council Meeting.

    Staff are recommending a phased approach to addressing traffic safety concerns for Early Place.
